On the first point – “What makes best affiliate programs?” – I would also mention discounts. Vendors can offer discounts to affiliates, helping their promotion efforts. Another way is letting the affiliates generate discounts from their own commission. Here’s more on this – http://blog.avangate.com/discount-coupons-affiliates/.

And speaking of residual income, I think that one of the best niches for this is software – there are many products that work on a subscription basis, like security software, games etc.
