This post serves as a proof that social media marketing indeed does work.
In one of their recent posts, Mashable reports that Peter Jackson’s latest sci-fi movie “District 9” trends on Twitter for the course of the past 2 days. The feedback is mostly positive, which seems to reflect all over the place.
District 9’s IMDB rating of 8.8/10 is mind blowing! Keep in mind that God Father, considered to be the greatest movie of all times, ranks at 9.1/10. This only serves as a substantial proof of how powerful Twitter and Social Media really are.
However, if you still don’t buy the fact that Twitter has everything to do with District 9’s massive success, let’s compare it to “Bruno,” the movie that was unfortunate enough to receive poor feedback via Twitter Trends.
On the opening night both Bruno and District 9 raised over 14 million at the box office. However, the second day turned out to be a disaster for Bruno. It raised only 8.7 million while District 9 managed to nearly match the grand opening with 12.6 million.
Another case study I would love to turn your attention to is Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince. Before the movie even hit the box office, its trailer already had over 25 million views on YouTube, 325 thousand Facebook fans and 47.5 thousand Twitter conversations a day (starting the week of the premier).
Results? Domestic Total of $285,375,638 (as of August 18,2009).
