“Foundation-the portion of a building’s structure that transfers the weight of the building into the ground strata.”

I have been marketing online for a couple of years now and one thing that caught my attention is the fact that no one talks about Foundation as a business term. Or at least no one in the Free Content World of Web 2.0 does.

However, the fact that no one talks about it doesn’t mean that it’s not important. In fact, I believe that the complete opposite is true – It Is CRITICAL for any business!

To better convey my point of why you should start building your business foundation before you actually start building your business, I’d like to bring your attention to the Petronas Twin Towers of Malaysia.

Also known as Petronas Towers or just Twin Towers, these amazing structures are considered to be the tallest twin towers in the world for over 11 years (from 1998). Being 1,482.6 ft. high, Petronas Towers have an astonishing foundation of 400 ft. Petronas Twins have such a foundation for one very simple yet VERY important reason – they’d fall otherwise. You can read more about Petronas Twin Towers here.

petronas twin towersThere’s a reason I have chosen this particular architectural accomplishment to convey my point. Petronas Twins being the highest Twin Towers in the world is something that any entrepreneur envisions for his business to become.

Every time we start a project we immediately project GIGANTIC plans for it. We see ourselves flourished in money, respect and opportunity as soon as we’ve completed the brainstorming session. Everyone’s done that at some point of their lives. A soldier dreaming to become a general two seconds after he graduated military academy. A shoe store owner who contemplates owning a chain of little shoe stores across America the second he sold his first pair of shoes. Even a part time freelancer who dreams of having his own free lancing agency he can run from his Blackberry. The last one is very futuristic, but nevertheless, I have met people that wish they could do that.

However, don’t get me wrong. I am not saying that you shouldn’t dream. You Should! Your dreams WILL come true. It’s LAW. What I’m saying is that in order for those dreams to come true you need a solid foundation to support them first.

Try to imagine your business as a tree. An ordinary tree, like the ones you see around your house and along the sidewalks. Usually they grow at a rate of 4-5 ft. a year. This is the usual rate of growth of most businesses. However, this is not what your business should be. Your business should be a bamboo.

Bamboos are amazing trees. Not only they are strong, but they have unique quality. While ordinary trees grow 4-5 ft. a year, bamboos don’t. They grow faster, but in a much more “foundational” way.

bambooThe first 3 years of its life – bamboo doesn’t grow at all. It takes 3 years to develop a strong foundation. Not even a single millimeter bursts out. Not until it’s ready. But when the time comes and the foundation is solid, bamboo grows 3-5 ft. a DAY. Thanks to its foundation, bamboo is able to grow at an astonishing rate and become stronger than any other tree in the world.

And that’s what your business should look like – a Bamboo. You should first lay a strong foundation and only then seek expansion and growth.

In my future posts I will be covering what foundation is and how you should approach building one. So stay tuned.

Yeah, definitely agree with you on that. I believe that the first priority of your first year starting a business is learning. Get as much knowledge as possible from the gurus, get a mentor, learn from blogs and forums. It is to strengthen your basic knowledge of your niche.

It is also the time where you’ll meet the most problems (called newbie’s pitfalls). And you’ll also learn from that. Get back up when you fall, don’t get discouraged. And great post, Igor ^-^

Igor

Great point that you have here, all too many people fall into the trap of chasing the quick buck and copying program after program which promise untold riches, whilst they may get some success it is not sustainable and soon fades away.

The key really is to build your business from the bottom up so that you create a strong, lasting business. Its one of the things that I have learnt from Alex Jeffreys, my mentor, in the sense of getting the basics right first.

All the best
