Great point that you have here, all too many people fall into the trap of chasing the quick buck and copying program after program which promise untold riches, whilst they may get some success it is not sustainable and soon fades away.

The key really is to build your business from the bottom up so that you create a strong, lasting business. Its one of the things that I have learnt from Alex Jeffreys, my mentor, in the sense of getting the basics right first.

I believe that the first priority of your first year starting a business is learning. Get as much knowledge as possible from the gurus, get a mentor, learn from blogs and forums. It is to strengthen your basic knowledge of your niche. It is also the time where you'll meet the most problems (called newbie's pitfalls). And you'll also learn from that. Get back up when you fall, don't get discouraged.
