StumbleUpon announced the release of the beta version of The New StumbleUpon. SU claim: “We have completely updated the interface, geared to be more simple, searchable and social. The new StumbleUpon preserves the functionality of the previous interface while adding frequently requested features, such as Search Your Favorites.” New StumbleUpon is supposed to be all about the stumblers’ experience and simplicity than anything else.
I believe that it is a huge leap forward for StumbleUpon. Currenly, they have #290 Alexa Traffic Rating which is 177 positions behind Digg-their main competitor. Switching the design to a simpler, more user friendly version will most definitely win the novice internet users’ voice over most of the Social Bookmarking sites out there…and adding the social ingredient to the mix will boost things ever more.
StumbleUpon team have also improved the StumbleUpon Firefox extension. They made it smaller, more flexible and added more useful features. In addition, they improved the on-site navigation so now you’re able to see exactly how many people viewed your content. To anyone who’s using social bookmarking to generate traffic-this feature alone is a major improvement to the stumbling experience.
Off the record: I’d really like StumbleUpon to kick Digg’s butt. Why? Because I like those guys-they try to keep things simple and stylish. Digg feels old, slow and out of shape. It takes forever to load and ranking on the first page is impossible no matter how great your content is.
Digg “feeds the Stallions and starves the Ponies”-only the well established, popular sites have a chance to byte a piece of that traffic pie. On the other hand, StumbleUpon provides a fair chance for everyone. It all depends on how interesting your stuff is. And that’s the way it should be, if you ask me!
If you’re the little guy, I highly recommend you try The New StumbleUpon and see if it fits your social bookmarking needs. Share your thoughts here by leaving a comment below!
